La Raza turns tables on Wave, 15-4

MILWAUKEE (Dec. 6, 2009) – Led by goalkeeper Jose Bontti and forward Chile Farias, La Raza de Monterrey avenged their home shutout loss to the Milwaukee Wave by spoiling the Wave’s home opener 15-4 Sunday.

Bontti made 21 saves, a handful in the highway-robbery category, while Farias tallied six points. His 3-pointer on a power play in the final minute of the third quarter was the key blow, putting La Raza on top 10-4.

“Their fuel for the fire the last two weeks was the 15-0 beating they got at home,” said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer. “They beat us about every way you can today.”

Milwaukee (1-2) extended its shutout streak over La Raza to five quarters, but Farias got Monterrey (2-1) on the board first, on the first of three assists by veteran defender Genoni Martinez.

The Wave came back with goals by Marco Terminesi and Kyle Lance to go on top, but just 22 seconds after Lance’s goal, John Krause put Monterrey in the lead for good with a 3-pointer.

“That 3-pointer, that was a killer,” Tozer said.

Farias’ 3-pointer, with just 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter, made it 10-4. Monterrey extended the lead on a goal by Bryon Alvarez and an empty-net 3-pointer by Martinez.

It was the first home opener loss for the Wave since the 2006-07 season. No Wave player had more than two points or one blocked shot.

“The biggest thing I’m concerned with is, the last two games, we got physically manhandled and didn’t battle,” Tozer said. “We’ll have to see how we come back.”

Saturday, the Wave host Philadelphia (1-2) at 6 p.m. The KiXX knocked off unbeaten Rockford 20-6 on Friday. Daryl Stuermer-Genesis Rewired plays a free postgame concert, and the first 5,000 fans receive a gemstone certificate from Robert Haack Jewelers. In addition, the Salvation Army will collect new hats and mittens, tossed on the field by fans after the first Wave goal.

The Milwaukee Wave professional indoor soccer team is the longest-running soccer franchise in continuous operation in the United States. The team celebrated its Silver Anniversary last season, and operates the largest summer soccer camp program in Wisconsin. For more information, visit milwaukeewave.com.
