Indoor soccer is one of the games that made history in the USA and not only. Being a fan myself, I started digging up everything I could find about this game and I came across the most successful teams that left a clear mark in its history. Let’s have a look at the top 3 and see how many championships they won and which were or are their most valuable players.
3. Baltimore Blast – 6 + 1 Titles
The team was initially founded in 1980 and was an important member of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Once the MISL folded in 1992, so did the team. But that was only to be reborn in the same year under the name Baltimore Spirit. Based in Maryland, USA, the Baltimore Blast has won a total of 7 championships so far, the first one being the 1983 – 1984 MISL Eastern season. Home games are played on the Royal Farms Arena, with red and gold, while their away colours are white and red. The team has won its first championship since their rebirth in the 2002 – 2003 3rd Eastern Season. The last title that the Blast won so far is the 2012 – 2013 MISL, with an average attendance of 5,876 fans. The coach is Danny Kelly and their top scorer is Tony Donatelli, with a total of 36 points.
2. Milwaukee Wave – 6 Titles
The team with the longest existence in the world of indoor soccer, the Milwaukee Wave was founded in 1984 and its home games are played on the UW–Milwaukee Panther Arena. The team’s colours are black, white and blue. Although they have played in every single match in the MISL and they were one of the most important members in the American Indoor Soccer Association, they didn’t win a championship until the 1997 – 1998 season of the National Professional Soccer League. Overall, the Milwaukee Wave have won 6 titles, the latest one in the 2011 – 2012 season of the MISL.
1. San Diego Sockers – 10 titles + 4
The San Diego Sockers are the most successful teams in the indoor soccer leagues. The first team with this name was founded in 1978, but initially it was called the Baltimore Comets back in 1974. Later on, in 1976 they moved to San Diego and played there as the San Diego Jaws. The team’s start was not a very successful one, but later victories quickly started adding up and the Sockers had two amazing runs of 5 consecutive titles, with a semifinal loss in 1986 – 1987 in-between. Until 1992, they already had 10 titles in their pockets, thanks to the coaching skills of Ron Newman. The team dissolved in 1996 and the new team under the old name was born again in 2001, but with no victories to show for that period. After folding once more in 2004, the San Diego Sockers returned to the field in 2009 until present day. Since then, they have added another 4 championship titles to their name and 11 wins, against 2 losses. Their top scorer is Kraig Chiles, with 62 points.
